25 Random Things About Me–Judy’s List

I love autumn colors

#26--I love autumn colors

I below to a Facebook blogging group, The Circulation Desk, and we’ve been enjoying a group challenge where everyone writes “25 random things” that others might not know (started by artist Franziska San Pedro). I’m now joining in with my post and—true to me—I’ve probably squeezed extras into my 25.

  1. My cat growing up was named Sheri (short for Sheherazade). I was so attached to her I wasn’t sure I ever wanted to have a cat again.
  2. When my current cat, Fretta, showed up as a hungry, pregnant stray on our deck, my husband was the one who was determined to feed her. I was too afraid. I said, “Do you understand what this means?” Needless to say, she came back the next day. That was 15 years ago.
  3. I didn’t learn how to swim until college. My instructor, Coach Boomer, taught me the key: how to exhale completely before taking another breath.
  4. I gave my first lecture in sixth grade, when I kept an unruly class attentive as I talked about the mythology of Greek and Roman gods. It was a morning class. We did not know that at that very time, President Kennedy was being shot in Dallas.
  5. I have two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. School has always been my psychological comfort zone! Is it any wonder I ended up teaching at universities for several decades?
  6. I taught myself to type in 4th grade after I found a small “How to Type” manual in my grandfather’s attic. I practiced all the traditional exercises – fff jjj ggg hhh – on my mother’s manual Smith-Corona, and I started typing up school assignments soon thereafter. From then on I typed a lot, and fast. In college the “e” key fell off my typewriter because of so much use.
  7. One year I participated in a typing contest called “Blazing Fingers.” It was in support of multiple sclerosis. I made it to the semi-finals, typing 102 wpm (adjusted for 2 mistakes) on an early-model electric typewriter. I won a small calculator and earned the cause a modest amount of money from people who had pledged cents on the number of words typed.
  8. If I have to choose, I’ll say Paris is the most beautiful city I’ve visited, and Florence is the most gratifying artistically.
  9. One summer I worked in London as a temporary secretary at different offices. At one office I had the assignment of going to a store to buy cookies and biscuits for tea.
  10. I can stand up in front of any size group and speak comfortably—and with pleasure—but I have horrible performance anxiety when it comes to music. I did o.k. hiding in the second violin section in junior high but was a disaster as an oboist (I played several instruments at different stages).
  11. I grew up overweight at a time when there weren’t many fat kids. The annual school weigh-in remains a torturous memory of elementary school.
  12. My best summer memories are of Camp Ridge Ho, a Girl Scout camp in upstate New York. I can still sing a lot of the camp songs.
  13. I met my husband through a newspaper ad, before there were on-line ads. My ad ran one week, and that was the only week he looked at the ads. He wrote me a letter and sent it in the postal mail.
  14. Acorns evoke a deep, pleasurable emotional connection to my childhood.
  15. I loved – loved – studying Latin! (Learning any language is fun, but Latin is fantastic!)
  16. My cat has kidney disease. Every other day I give her subcutaneous fluids by inserting a needle and letting fluid drip from an IV bag. This is expensive and time consuming, and she never says thank you.
  17. Most likely I will die before we ever know what kind of intelligent life is out there in the vast universe. This has long been a source of disappointment for me.
  18. One summer at camp some girls accused me of killing God. They then prayed very loudly for my soul. It wasn’t until they taunted me for being fat that I was really bothered.
  19. I love a good snowstorm, even when it creates havoc.
  20. I decided to stop drinking alcohol because it affected me so quickly and strongly. It was a one-time decision that required no particular effort. I decided to stop eating sugar and flour because it was making my life miserable and destroying me physically. It took me over 40 years.
  21. I wash out used plastic bags and hang them on clips in my shower so I can reuse them.
  22. My grandparents and my father were devoted Yankees fans. When the Yankees played in postseason, my father called me at the end of every game. I didn’t tell him I had become a Mariners fan and that the Mariners pretty well hated the Yankees (especially when A-Rod donned the pinstripes).
  23.  I regret that I never told my sister how much I admired her for standing up for social justice.
  24. I wasn’t particularly happy academically in high school, and I left after my junior year to go to college. I never completed the requirements for high school graduation. But the school couldn’t quite grasp that I was gone (I did tell them!) and they issued a diploma the next year anyway.
  25. No matter how many times I read Little Women, I cry when Beth dies.

Questions for Reflection: How does this kind of list deepen or alter your understanding of someone? What goes on your list?

Writing Prompts: As I read a list like this, I realize ______” (then keep writing); “My list begins with ______” (then keep writing a full list!).

Another list for me to love!!! So many gems on your Random 25, Judy, I don’t know where to start…

Fretta’s inability to be grateful for your efforts is a cat thing. Trust me, if you were taking such grand care of a dog, you’d really feel the appreciation!

I Love that you just left high school and they still gave you a diploma.

Who needs that stinkin’ senior year — you had your sights set a lot higher academically.

#18 had me laughing & crying. You can handle being taunted for “killing god”, but don’t call me fat!

I always cry in Little Women too….

Heidi, Yes, I know cats just don’t know how to express gratitude. In this way dogs are quite superior! But no matter Fretta’s attitude, I always feel quite gentle and loving towards her afterwards. Maybe I’m just relieved we made it through!

I think it’s interesting how making a list like this brings forth such an array of memories and thoughts. Those camp memories weren’t buried deep–I do remember them–but it’s not like I had been thinking about them. It’s as if writing the list helps us remember ourselves, too. (It also made me want to go soak up a few passages of Little Women…) Really enjoying this way of sharing ourselves.

Judy, What a marvelous list! I must admit I’m a little intimidated by your brain power but love you anyway. I’m happy to hear your Girl Scout camp experiences were (overall) enjoyable (although I’d like to go back in time and knock some heads together for being mean to you). My camp experiences were less than enjoyable as I’ve mentioned before. One of my favorite books is Little Women. So happy you shared these random facts!

Trish, Thanks for not holding my academic record against me. I might have gone on for more degrees if I didn’t realize it would make me a little weird. As for camp, the good so outweighed the bad, I wouldn’t exchange the experience for anything. I was actually very shy and for a long time was scared to be away from home. So going to camp and having wonderful experiences was quite affirming, and the incidents I mentioned didn’t change that. Thanks for taking the time to learn more about me.

It will come as no surprise that I have a great admiration for you, both as a person and as a superb writer. This wonderful list is just more proof that my admaration is indeed warranted.

I have been thinking about writing a post about school bullies and name calling. Both juveniles and adults are guilty of this form of ignorance. Sorry that you even remember that hurt. I have stories to tell in that arena as well.

I could go on and on, 1-25 but I won’t. Let it be enough for me to say that I love you even more for sharing all this with us mere mortals.

Bill, Since you connected with the idea of bullying/taunting, here’s a link to a post I once wrote. http://www.thereflectivewriter.com/stories-that-stick-witness-to-bullying/
Interestingly, I mention my sister in that post, and in my 25 random things I say how I regretted not expressing my admiration. Her behavior in this story is one of those early events that built the admiration. When I wrote the post “25 random things,” I didn’t remember having mentioned my sister in the bullying post.

The more you get to know me, the more you will understand how I am very mortal, very much like everyone trying to figure out life (although I think I remember and think about memories more than most!).

Hi Judy,

why am I not surprised when I read your random list?
I think my favorite is the plastic bag reuse and that you wash them out and hang them.
I had no idea you were overweight. Kids can be so cruel, when you’re older you can deal with this much better but when you’re young emotions are so much stronger and last a lifetime. From my experience, the mean kids will have problems in their adult life and and are struggling with themselves. Maybe because their focus was always outside of themselves.

So much fun our little exercise! I am happy to know you ☆

Franziska, I thought reading your list was particularly fun after meeting you in person, and I hope you felt the same. As for the cruel kids, yes, it’s part of childhood, sadly. I’m trusting a lot of those kids grew up to be normal adults. It didn’t fall in the category of the really dangerous bullying you see now.

I really enjoyed writing this list, Franziska, and I thank you for starting us off on this challenge!

Oh me too Judy, I felt the same way!

And the kids: I didn’t mean that they turned into monsters, the ones I know have quite some self-esteem issues, seem to worry all the time and gossip about everything and everyone. They don’t seem to have much peace in their lives (just my observance).

I learned Latin in school too and loved it! And I also always cry when Beth dies (and also when Gilbert dies in Ann of Green Gables) but I can’t believe you wash out plastic bags lol. You even make a list of random things sound poetic – loved it.

Hi Louise, Yes, I’m a bit of a freak about plastic bags. I use them when I buy veggies, and they get wet and dirty. So when I wash them out, I can reuse them. I guess I feel guilty about using so many in the first place…we are fortunate that we have good recycling here in general, including food waste (it gets made into compost) and most plastics. But creating less to be recycled is the best first strategy, so I try to reuse as much as possible. Anyway, I can’t even recycle the bags if I don’t clean them and dry them! Thus my shower system. :)

Writing these lists is really a wonderful way to get to know everyone better. I’m in awe that you learned to type in the 4th grade. You must always have loved the written word. I’m certainly not surprised by your degrees or loving Latin but I was surprised to learn that you’re a musician too. Thanks for sharing.
